Four Marathon Training Tips for Beginners

So, you’ve made the decision to start training for your first marathon. As you start pounding the pavement during your long runs and doing other exercises to build up your stamina, it’s important that you train properly to avoid injury and other problems down the road. Here are a few tips that you should keep in mind as you prepare for race day.

Get the Right Shoes

Your regular tennis shoes may not be able to keep up with the demands of training and provide you with the support you will need on your runs. You should invest in a good pair of running shoes that are made to give your feet some additional cushioning. Some of the best running shoes on the market can also absorb more shock and correct foot pronation problems.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is key to successful marathon training. It’s best to drink six to eight ounces of fluid after every 20 minutes of running. Whether you choose to drink water or some type of sports drink, you should avoid drinks that contain caffeine or other diuretic properties. Even if it’s cold outside and you don’t feel thirsty, you could still become dehydrated without even knowing it, and this can lead to serious problems.

Treat Injuries Quickly

If you do happen to become injured while training, you should have any injuries treated quickly to avoid further problems. Some injuries, such as those caused by repetitive strain, can possibly be treated by simply taking a few days off from training and resting. You can also get treatment at a sports therapy center that specializes in physical therapy and athletic training. The sooner you allow yourself to heal from your injuries, the sooner you’ll be able to get back into full marathon training.

Consider Running with a Buddy

Having someone else to run with can help you stay motivated as you continue to log your weekly mileage. Running with someone else on a regular basis will also make you more accountable for your training. Plus, you’ll be able to share stories and offer each other support as you work toward reaching your marathon goal.

You can make things easier on yourself and achieve success if you properly train for your marathon. By taking the necessary precautions, you can stay healthy and motivated as you prepare for your big race.
